Why people stay in Aluva
Aluva is a town on the Periyar about 20 km north of Ernakulam, and its entire modern identity is connectivity. Every long-distance train that passes Kochi stops here. It is the northern terminus of the Kochi Metro. It is roughly 10 km from Cochin International Airport. If you are arriving on a late flight, leaving on an early one, or heading to Munnar and Thekkady by road, Aluva is the logical, unromantic, cheap answer — rooms are ₹1,600 to ₹4,500 where the equivalent near Marine Drive is double.
It is a real Kerala market town rather than a sight. The stretch from the metro station down Bank Junction and along the Market Road is textile shops, gold showrooms, bakeries, juice stalls and traffic that seizes solid at 6pm. But it has one genuinely good thing: the Manappuram, the broad sandy bank of the Periyar beside the Shiva temple, where the river runs shallow over sand and families walk in the evening. During Sivarathri in February or March the whole sandbank becomes a fairground and a mass pilgrimage, and the town is unbookable.
At 9pm Aluva is still awake in a workaday way. The Malabar-style biryani and kothu parotta joints near the bus stand and along the Ernakulam road serve until 11, tea shops trade later, and the metro runs until roughly 10pm. Bars are hotel bars, and Kerala's dry Sundays and holidays catch out visitors regularly. This is not a place to spend a week — but two nights here bracketing a hill trip make more sense than dragging bags into the old city twice.
Skip Aluva if your holiday is Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and the harbour: you will spend 50 minutes each way on the metro and resent it. Choose it if you have a car, an early flight, or a plan that goes east into the hills.
The best-value cluster is within 500 metres of Aluva metro station and the railway station, on the roads around Bank Junction and the Ernakulam–Aluva highway — this puts you on Line 1 and on the airport feeder bus without an auto. Expect ₹1,600 to ₹3,200 for a clean business room with air conditioning and breakfast, and ₹4,000 to ₹6,500 for the branded mid-range towers along the bypass. Riverside guesthouses near the Manappuram and the Advaita Ashram are quieter and greener, ₹2,000 to ₹3,500, but a 15-minute walk from the station in heat. Avoid the cheapest lodges immediately behind the KSRTC bus stand: thin walls, 24-hour horn noise and a 4am departure soundtrack. Also avoid booking here during Sivarathri unless you came for it — prices triple and roads close.
Things to do in Aluva
The Manappuram is the wide sand flat on the Periyar beside the Aluva Sivakshetram, a ten-minute walk from the metro station down Temple Road. In the dry months from December to April the river drops and you can walk far out on the sand. Evenings bring peanut carts and families; the water looks tempting but the current is deceptive.
Founded in 1913 on the riverbank at Aluva, this is where the Guru convened the 1924 all-religion conference. It is a working ashram, calm and mostly empty of visitors, about 1.5 km from the metro station. Dress modestly, take your shoes off, and keep the camera down inside. Mornings before 10am are the right time.
Aluva is the northern terminus of the Kochi Metro. The elevated run south to Maharaja's College takes roughly 45 to 50 minutes for about ₹50 to ₹60, and the stretch over the Periyar and past Edappally is the best cheap view in the city. Trains run from about 6am to 10pm; buy a Kochi1 card if you are here three nights.
The cluster of Thalassery-style biryani houses on the road between the KSRTC bus stand and Bank Junction do a proper short-grain kaima biryani for ₹150 to ₹220, and kothu parotta with beef for less. They fill at 1pm and again after 8pm. This is the best-value eating anywhere in this file and it is nobody's idea of a tourist restaurant.
Kalady, the birthplace of Adi Shankara, is about 12 km east of Aluva on the Periyar, with the two shrines and the nine-storey Keerthi Sthambham. Malayattoor's Kurishumudi hill church is another 12 km on, a stiff hour's climb rewarded with a view over the river plain. Buses run from Aluva stand; a taxi covering both is around ₹1,500.
The riverside Alwaye Palace, the former Travancore royal summer residence beside the Marthanda Varma bridge, is a short walk from the Manappuram. It is more a pleasant exterior and a riverbank than a museum. Combine it with a stroll across the old bridge at dusk, when the light on the Periyar is the reason anyone photographs Aluva at all.

Getting around Aluva
From Cochin airport at Nedumbassery, Aluva is 10 km: the CIAL–Aluva feeder bus takes about 25 minutes for roughly ₹40, and a prepaid taxi is ₹500 to ₹700. Aluva railway station is on the main Shoranur–Ernakulam line and every express stops, so long-distance arrivals should book to Aluva, not Ernakulam. Metro Line 1 starts here and runs to Tripunithura via Edappally, Palarivattom, MG Road and Vyttila, roughly 6am to 10pm, ₹10 to ₹60. The KSRTC and private bus stands sit 400 metres apart near Bank Junction with departures east to Munnar, Thodupuzha and Kothamangalam. Autos within town are ₹40 to ₹120; walking Bank Junction to the river takes ten minutes.
