Getting there: train, bus or car

Alappuzha, still widely called Alleppey, is 53km south of Kochi and the train is the least stressful way to reach it. Departures from Ernakulam Junction (South) run through the morning and take 75 to 95 minutes; second sitting is around ₹30, sleeper-class seats ₹60 to ₹90, and air-conditioned chair car ₹150 to ₹200. Book a day ahead on IRCTC for reserved classes or just walk on to an unreserved coach for the price of a coffee. Alappuzha station is 3km from the boat jetty, ₹80 by autorickshaw.

KSRTC buses leave Ernakulam every 15 to 30 minutes and cost ₹60 to ₹110 depending on whether it is an ordinary or fast passenger service, taking about two hours through Cherthala. A taxi is ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 return with waiting, 90 minutes each way on the NH66, and makes sense if you are two or more people or want to stop at Cherthala or Marari on the way. Leave Kochi by 7.30am: houseboats depart Punnamada around 11am and you do not want to be negotiating at 11.15.

The houseboat question, answered honestly

You do not need to sleep on a houseboat to see the backwaters, and for a day trip you should not. Charter a one-bedroom boat as a day cruise, roughly 11am to 5pm, for ₹6,000 to ₹9,000 for two people including a cooked lunch of karimeen fish, rice, thoran and pappadam. That is the whole boat, not a seat. Two-bedroom boats are ₹9,000 to ₹14,000 for a day. Prices drop 25 to 40 percent from June to August and spike between Christmas and New Year, when advance booking is essential.

Book through the boat owner or a jetty-side operator at Finishing Point on Punnamada rather than a Kochi hotel desk, which adds a 15 to 25 percent commission. Check three things before paying: that the boat actually leaves the main lake for the narrower canals, that there is a proper kitchen aboard rather than reheated food, and that the toilet is functional. Large boats stay on the wide water, which is scenic but repetitive. Smaller boats reach the interesting bunds where villages, coir yards and duck flocks are.

The better cheap option: a country canoe

For many visitors the best two hours in Alleppey cost ₹800 to ₹1,500. A country canoe, poled rather than motorised, takes two to four people into the narrow canals behind Punnamada and around Kainakary where houseboats physically cannot go. You pass paddy fields below sea level behind their bunds, women beating coir fibre, ducks herded in the hundreds, toddy shops, and household jetties where the day happens at eye level. Arrange it at the jetty or through a homestay; morning, from about 7.30am, is quietest and coolest.

The other low-cost route is the state water transport ferry. Public boats run from Alappuzha jetty to Kottayam and Kavalam and cost ₹20 to ₹40 for journeys of two to three hours, on the same canals the tourist boats use. Schedules are posted at the jetty and change with water levels; the Alappuzha-Kottayam service is the classic. It has no commentary, no lunch and hard benches, and it is the single best value backwater experience in Kerala.

The town itself, and where to eat

Alappuzha is more than a boat departure point. The beach on the west side has a pier built in 1862, a lighthouse open most afternoons for about ₹25, and a broad strip of sand that gets busy at sunset. Mullackal Street is the shopping spine, good for coir mats, bell metal and cheap textiles. The Coir Museum and the Revi Karunakaran Museum are both modest and both worth 45 minutes if a squall rolls in. In August, Punnamada hosts the Nehru Trophy snake boat race, when the town is packed and rooms triple.

Eat at Thaff on the Mullackal side for grilled chicken, shawarma and Kerala-Arab plates at ₹150 to ₹350, or Halais for biryani and beef in the ₹150 to ₹300 range. Chakara, the rooftop restaurant at Raheem Residency on the beach road, is the upmarket choice at ₹800 to ₹1,500 a head with sea views. If you are on the boat you will be fed aboard, so use the town meal on the return leg, before catching a 6pm or 7pm train back to Ernakulam.

Day trip or overnight stay?

A day trip works: 8am train, 11am to 5pm on the water, 7pm train, back in Fort Kochi by 8.30pm. What you miss is the backwater at dawn, which is genuinely different, and the option of a mid-afternoon nap. If you can spare a night, Alappuzha stays are good value against Kochi: canal-side homestays at ₹2,000 to ₹3,500, mid-range hotels near the jetty at ₹3,500 to ₹5,000, and Raheem Residency, the restored 1868 bungalow on the beach road, at ₹12,000 to ₹20,000.

Note the trade-off for people basing a whole trip in Kochi. Keeping your Fort Kochi homestay at ₹1,500 to ₹2,400 and doing Alleppey as a day means no luggage shuffle, no second check-in and no wasted half-day. Paying for a houseboat night at ₹8,000 to ₹13,000 means one fewer night in a city you probably want more of. My advice for three or four-day visits: day-cruise from Alleppey, sleep in Kochi. For a week, take the overnight.
